Cell Therapies
Some types of immunotherapy involve direct injection of immune cells. One experimental approach involves removing part of a tumor and collecting the T cells and natural killer cells inside it. These naturally occurring tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, or TILs, which are already able to recognize the cancer, are multiplied in a lab and returned to the patient in larger numbers. Another method uses a harmless virus to insert genes into T cells to make them express receptors that can recognize cancer cells.
