Pain in Your Hands and Feet

Some chemotherapy drugs can cause peripheral neuropathy, that is, damage to the nerves in the extremities. The result can be pain, burning, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet. Be sure to tell your care team about any symptoms as soon as you become aware of them, since early treatment and sometimes changes in medication or dosage can prevent the problem from worsening. In mild cases, over-the-counter medications may be enough, but severe or chronic pain may require physical therapy, stronger medications and other interventions. Your doctor may refer you to a pain specialist.
