Long-Term Side Effects

Many side effects from chemotherapy affect you primarily while you are undergoing treatment, but some can last longer. For example, some chemotherapy drugs may cause heart problems, raise blood pressure, damage the lungs or cause thinning of the bones (osteoporosis). It’s important to discuss possible long-term side effects with your cancer care team before treatment starts so you can take actions to protect yourself. Consider getting a referral to a cardiologist, who may help you reduce cardiovascular risk by prescribing  other medications and recommending a healthy lifestyle. Many cancer centers also offer cancer rehab as well as cancer survivorship programs, which offer comprehensive support for long-term recovery and health.
