Libido/Sexual Dysfunction
Cancer and its treatments, including chemotherapy and hormone therapy, can affect sexual desire as well as the ability to have satisfying sex. Common issues include pain during intercourse for women and erectile dysfunction for men. As with mood changes, other side effects of chemotherapy (fatigue, pain, sleep problems, GI disturbances, hair loss)—and, in some cases, the drugs used to counter these side effects—can also affect sexual desire and function. If you are concerned about or experiencing sexual issues, talk to your cancer care team. Some cancer centers offer referrals to sexual health experts trained in oncology-related issues. If you’re already working with a psychologist, be sure to raise any sexual concerns you have.
