Bryant Gumbel
For 15 years the cohost of the Today show, Gumbel, 69, came forward in 2009 with the news that he had recently had surgery to remove a tumor from his lung. Gumbel had quit smoking 30 years earlier, after he had been a three-pack-a-day smoker for a decade. It appears that Gumbel was among the lucky folks whose lung cancer was discovered early and hence remained eligible for surgery. Gumbel appears well these days in his current role as host of HBO’s Real Sports.
