Appetite/Weight Loss
Loss of appetite is a common side effect of cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, and can lead to unwanted weight loss. Chemotherapy can cause altered taste, nausea and mouth sores, making it hard to eat. Take anti-nausea medication as prescribed; ginger helps too, as may cannabis. Schedule a visit with an oncology-trained registered dietitian who can help you plan nutritious, easy-to-make meals. Look for high-protein, high-calorie, nourishing foods, like hard-boiled eggs, avocado slices, yogurt, tuna salad and smoothies. Experiment with small, frequent meals. If you have mouth sores, try cold, refreshing smoothies. Tip: When you’re nauseous, skip favorite foods so you don’t develop an aversion to them.
