Kathy Bates
The earthy Misery, Dolores Claiborne and Titanic star, who had previously survived ovarian cancer, told People magazine in September 2012 that she’d undergone a double mastectomy after a breast cancer diagnosis. (Her mother also developed the disease, like her aunt, and had a radical mastectomy, she told Yahoo Lifestyle.)
Bates also subsequently dealt with lymphedema, fluid collection that swells the arms or legs when lymph nodes are removed or damaged during cancer surgery. In addition, she chose not to have reconstructive breast surgery. “I’ve joined the ranks of women who are going flat, as they say,” she told ET. “I don’t have breasts—so why do I have to pretend like I do?”
