Fans of the World Wrestling Entertainment had a reason to rejoice recently when popular professional wrestler Roman Reigns, whose real name is Leati Joseph Anoa’i, announced that his cancer is in remission, CNN reports.
“The good news is, I’m in remission, y’all,” said Reigns during a WWE Raw event in Atlanta on February 22. “So with that being said—the Big Dog is back.”
The 33-year-old has battled leukemia since age 22. Last October, in an emotional speech, he announced that his cancer had returned and that he would be giving up his WWE Universal Championship in order to fight the disease.
But Reigns made it clear that he wouldn’t be retiring. “I will beat this, and I will be back, so you will see me very, very soon,” he said.
Upon returning to the wrestling ring, Reigns thanked fans for their constant support and also discussed how he struggled to share his cancer fight in 2018.
“I’m not going to lie,” said Reigns. “Before my announcement in October, I was terrified. I was scared. I was insecure. And I didn’t really know if I wanted to share that secret with the world.”
However, “that overwhelming support that you gave me, it gave me strength, it gave me new life,” he said. “It gave me a new opportunity, and it gave me a new purpose.”
Reigns also said he would use his platform to raise awareness and support those in need.
Following his announcement, Reigns took to his Instagram to once again thank everyone, including his family.
“I just want to say thank you to my mom, my family, my children,” Reigns said. “And most of all, thank you to my wife along with everybody else who sent their support and prayers.”
